Back in October 1998
the band spent a weekend at
the "House in the Woods" studios in Surrey, recording some of our favourite
songs with the idea
of releasing an album. Choosing an album worth from a sixty song
repertoire was tricky, but in the end we decided
on these:
INTERNATIONAL PLAYBOY: Originally recorded by
the late great Wilson Pickett, on the
album he recorded with Gamble and Huff in Philadelphia.
Then the inevitable MUSTANG SALLY (OK,OK but you have to do it)
followed swiftly by Johnny Guitar
Watson's REAL MUTHA FOR YA and Sam and Dave's YOU DON'T KNOW LIKE I
KNOW. Next there's the standard (sung most famously by Otis
Redding) TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS, which is a bit of a sleeper: starts like a ballad,
but by the end, it's ripping your head off, Memphis-style.
The title track, CAN'T SLEEP, was written by our
own Norman and his
sidekick Professor Badd; it's a moody swayer with a scorching baritone
solo from the esteemed Johnny Semprini.
Next up, a country-funker STANDIN' ON SHAKY
GROUND. Always a sure-fire crowd pleaser, there's been many versions of this from the Temptations onwards.
A Graveney/Badd P-Funker, BOOTY SPANK,
featuring Marcus "Love" Jones
on trombone, and Carl's BOTTOM BELE hi-life tour de force make up the other
two originals. The album closes with two rippers: James Brown's SEX MACHINE, and our unofficial
theme song, (courtesy of Tower of Power), SOUL WITH A CAPITAL
"S".
